The election agent who is too young to vote

A teenager who is too young to vote is believed to have become the youngest election agent in the country.Oliver Foster, 17, has been campaigning for UK Independence Party candidate David Daniel in the Morley and Outwood constituency, West Yorkshire.

Oliver has been knocking on doors, delivering leaflets and organising meetings ahead of the 6 May election.

But he said he was happy for the voting age not to increase, as his generation needed to be educated before voting.

Oliver said: "My friends find it quite curious that I'm so interested in politics, but I have been in UKIP for just over a year and I want to get more involved.

"I'm hoping to go on to stand for the council and for Parliament in the future."

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has suggested lowering the voting age to 16 - an idea not supported by Oliver.

"My generation doesn't seem to be interested. I think it would be dangerous to reduce the voting age. It's best to let them get educated before they do something like that."

Morley and Outwood constituency was newly created for this election under boundary changes.

Labour's Schools Secretary Ed Balls is expected to hold it as a safe seat. This article is from the BBC News website. ? British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.
