    Murder detectives' Facebook plea

Police investigating the murder of a Cardiff teenager are using the social networking site Facebook to appeal for witnesses.Aamir Siddiqi, 17, suffered multiple stab wounds at his family's home in Ninian Road, Roath on Sunday 11 April after being attacked by two men.

Officers have also posted video footage of appeals by his family on YouTube.

A shop nearby has been examined by police who say nobody from the shop is directly involved with the crime.

Ch Supt Tooby, Divisional Commander for Cardiff said hundreds of tributes and messages had been left on Aamir's Facebook page by his many friends, fellow students and general members of the public who had been touched by his tragic death.

"We know that Aamir was a user of Facebook," said Ch Supt Bob Tooby.

"Facebook is a very powerful communication tool, especially among younger people, which we are utilising to push our appeals to as wide an audience as possible.

"Aamir's family made an emotional appeal for the public to help find his killer which we have posted on the internet video site YouTube, again with the aim of reaching as many people as possible.

"I would like to thank the public for the excellent response we have received to our appeals so far and I would encourage anyone with information to come forward and contact the police as a matter of urgency."

The Facebook profile for the appeal is called Incident Room Cardiff.

Aamir's parents, aged 55 and 68, also suffered serious injuries during the attack but were subsequently discharged from hospital following treatment.

South Wales Police said they still want to trace two men who were seen leaving the area shortly after the incident and heading towards Shirley Road.

One is described as being of Asian appearance, aged late 20s, of average height, stocky build. He had dark hair and was wearing dark clothing.

The second man is described as being of Asian appearance, aged early 20s, of slim build, 5ft 11in (1.8m) in height. He was wearing a white jacket with a grey stripe down the sleeves.

As they were leaving the area they were seen to be pulling black-knitted balaclavas over their faces.

Officers want to hear from anyone who may have seen these men in the area or who saw or heard anything suspicious in the Ninian Road area on Sunday 11 April.

    Lines of inquiry

Earlier the hunt for the men was focused on a shop in the nearby suburb of Cathays.

Neither the shop nor its occupants were "in any way" directly involved in the teenager's death, said police.

But South Wales Police said it was one of many positive lines of inquiry.

It is understood CCTV from the shop has been taken away and is being examined by officers.

One theory police are investigating is that the murder was a case of mistaken identity.

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact the Incident Room at Cardiff Central Police Station on 02920 571530 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.This article is from the BBC News website. ?
