    Volcanic ash cloud grounds flights

Air passengers in England are facing huge disruption after an ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in Iceland forced airports to close.Flights from Manchester, Liverpool, Stansted, Newcastle, Birmingham, East Midlands, Leeds Bradford, Bristol and Blackpool have been cancelled.

The eruption under a glacier in the Eyjafjallajoekull area of Iceland caused ash to drift across to the UK.

Flights from London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports are also affected.

The Air Traffic Control Service (Nats) imposed restrictions after the Met Office warned the ash could damage plane engines.

All flights to and from Manchester were disrupted and Liverpool's John Lennon Airport suspended services until at least 1300 BST.

Newcastle Airport's airspace is completely closed while more than 147 flights to and from Gatwick have been cancelled.

At Heathrow, 150 services were affected and 70 flights from Birmingham International Airport were cancelled. This article is from the BBC News website. ? British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.
