McNamara set to land England post

Bradford Bulls boss Steve McNamara is expected to be named as England's new coach on Wednesday.McNamara spent three years as assistant to previous national boss Tony Smith, who quit the role in November 2009 after the Four Nations tournament.

McNamara, 38, is expected to see out his Bulls contract before going full-time with England from October.

It is thought the Rugby Football League may appoint veteran Australian coach Brian Smith to mentor him in the job.

If appointed, McNamara's first task will be to pick a side to play France on 12 June.

The Bulls were initially reluctant to have McNamara job-sharing because they believed his predecessor at Odsal, Brian Noble, was distracted from club responsibilities when he took on the Great Britain job in 2004.

With the likes of Wakefield boss John Kear and England rugby union defence coach Mike Ford having ruled themselves out of the running, there was no obvious successor in place, so the two parties seem to have come to a compromise.

Bradford chairman Peter Hood said the board had planned to discuss McNamara's future next week but now they appear resigned to the decision being taken out of their hands.

"The interests of the club will always come first," stated Hood.

"I am absolutely confident that Steve McNamara will remain in charge of Bradford until the end of the season."This article is from the BBC News website. ? British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.
