Teachers may take industrial action if the Scottish government fails to order a delay to new exams linked to the new curriculum, the BBC has learned. The EIS union said its members were reporting that schools are not ready to change over to new exam courses linked to the Curriculum for Excellence.
Another teachers' union, the SSTA, said schools were facing potential chaos.
The education secretary said his advisory board would recommend when the change should be rolled out to schools.
The board - which is meeting on Thursday morning - is expected to say the new curriculum should be introduced in the new school year, as originally planned.
That decision is likely to anger the Scottish Secondary Teachers' Association (SSTA) which says a mass survey of its members indicates that a lack of information and resources is sabotaging attempts to bring in new exam courses.
Tailored support
Meanwhile, the EIS union has warned that if the Scottish government decide to plough ahead with bringing in the new exams, it may call on members to work-to-rule, a move which could force a delay.
Education Secretary Mike Russell has said 10 proposed changes to the curriculum, including tailored support for schools, will iron out the problems.
A Scottish government spokeswoman said: "These type of concerns have been raised by the SSTA for some time and we know that not every teachers is fully confident about the new curriculum at this stage.
"The 10-point plan - which was based on emerging evidence from our own survey of teachers - provides exactly the type and nature of support that this SSTA survey suggests teachers want.
"Every secondary school which says it needs support will receive it."
The new system, which has been billed as the biggest shake-up in Scottish education for a generation, is intended to broaden pupils' learning - but critics have said it is not fully developed and that guidance about its implementation is sketchy. This article is from the BBC News website. ?
