    Drugs baron 'faces ?100m claim'

Jailed Liverpool drugs baron Curtis Warren could be ordered to pay back tens of millions of pounds he is thought to have made from his crimes.Warren, 46, is serving a 13-year prison sentence after being found guilty, with five others, of plotting to smuggle £1m-worth of cannabis into Jersey.

The States of Jersey outlined a proceeds of crime application against him in a court hearing this week.

Warren's solicitor said the States was seeking compensation of over £100m.

Keith Dyson said the Jersey authorities were looking at receiving compensation for a sum of money, in excess of £100m, which it is claimed passed through Warren's hands as a result of international drug deals.

Mr Dyson said his client would be fighting the case all the way.

A spokesman for the States' law officers said: "Mr Warren was sentenced on 3 December 2009.

"At that hearing, the prosecution persuaded the Royal Court to consider making a confiscation order against Mr Warren pursuant to Article 3 of the Drug Trafficking Offences (Jersey) Law 1988.

"The court then decided to postpone the determination of the application for a confiscation order until after sentence and the matter will be heard sometime later this year."

Warren has appealed against his conviction and a decision is due on 5 May.

His solicitors argued the police and Crown had been biased against him, and said the defence had been denied three "crucial" witnesses during the trial.

Warren was once Interpol's most wanted trafficker and is the only known drugs dealer to have appeared on the Sunday Times' Rich List.

He was jailed last December after being found guilty at Jersey's Royal Court of conspiring to import drugs.

During his trial, the court heard how he planned to flood the island with drugs brought from Amsterdam but was foiled by a police operation. This article is from the BBC News website. ? British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.
