'800 jobs set to go' at Quinn's

The administrators of Quinn Insurance Ltd have drawn up plans to make about 800 staff redundant, Irish state broadcaster RTE is reporting. It is part of their plans to downsize, and makes up about one third of the staff employed by the company.

The redundancies, most of which would be in the Republic, would be voluntary, and are due to take place gradually.

Staff in all Quinn centres will be briefed on the plans on Friday afternoon.

About 600 people are employed by Quinn Insurance in County Fermanagh.

In April, it was placed into administration after the Irish financial regulator said he believed its assets had been overstated by about 450 million euros.

The company was ordered not to write any new UK business. Those restrictions were later partially eased.

Although the jobs affected will mostly be in the Republic, the restructuring relates primarily to Quinn Insurance Ltd's businesses in the UK.

Much of the UK business is handled by staff at Quinn's offices in Dublin, Cavan and Navan.

The details of the package to be offered to employees have not been revealed, it is understood workers will be offered more than the statutory redundancy.

A spokesperson for the administrators said that they "will communicate the announcement to staff before communicating it to anyone else".This article is from the BBC News website. ? British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.
