England fan loses riot legal bid

An England football fan is facing two years in jail in Portugal after failing in his High Court bid to launch a new legal challenge against extradition.Garry Mann, 52, of Faversham, in Kent, was convicted for his role in a riot in Albufeira during Euro 2004.

He had his appeal against extradition to Portugal rejected by the European Court of Human Rights on 27 April.

The High Court issued an injunction, but judges ruled his application for judicial review "unarguable" on Friday.

    Government condemned

Mann's lawyers had argued at the High Court that there was new evidence from the Foreign Office to support his case against extradition, and allowing it to proceed would violate his human rights.

In an application submitted to the court last week, documents said Mann agreed to be deported three days after being sentenced in the belief his jail term would be waived.

But they said a judge who later agreed to his extradition did so without hearing that this was also the understanding of the Foreign Office.

Portugal is seeking his extradition because Mann did not serve his sentence in the UK after deportation.

Mann has condemned the British government's handling of the case. This article is from the BBC News website. ? British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.
