FA to review Capello website link

The Football Association is to review England manager Fabio Capello's involvement in a ratings website for players at this summer's World Cup.The 'Capello Index' would provide performance data on all players within two hours of games ending in the tournament in South Africa.

BBC Sports Editor David Bond said: "The perception is that he is rating England players immediately after matches.

"He is not, but the problem for the FA is that it will look like he is."

Bond added: "Expect a statement from the FA later and expect Capello to drop it."

Bond said there would be a fear within Wembley that the website could "undermine" England's entire World Cup campaign, if Capello was seen to be publicly criticising players immediately after vital matches.

And a number of newspapers suggested England had scored their first own goal weeks before the tournament is due to start in South Africa.

On Monday the Italian, 63, announced himself as a co-founder in the, alongside Chicco Merighi, the founder of an online gambling company.

"It's not only about money, my interest is in football," said Capello.

But Bond said: "The idea of managers cashing in doesn't look good for Wembley.

"It's the last thing the FA would have wanted on today of all days, the day he names his squad for South Africa.

"Although he says it's not about money the perception is he is cashing in. He already earns £6m a season."

However, Bond added it may not be easy for the FA to persuade him to completely scrap it.

"England qualified at the top of their group, he is very passionate about football and it's probably very difficult for people to say no to him," said Bond.

In the Capello Index, players' performances would be marked out of 100 - based on computer analysis devised by the former Roma, Juventus and Real Madrid boss over the last two years.

Capello said the index would be "good for the fans".

Points would be dished out depending on the area of the pitch players competed in and the importance of the match.

Capello will hope the next four weeks bring the stability and continuity required to plan for success in South Africa
A four-week trial of the index - limited to players from Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur - rated Ledley King, Michael Dawson and Sol Campbell as the best English central defenders ahead of John Terry and Rio Ferdinand.

And Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole, tipped to miss out on a place in Capello's 30-man provisional squad for South Africa on Tuesday, was ranked as the third best English midfielder.

Capello said the index would provide detailed information for fans to analyse. His business partner Merighi is chairman of Goal Ventures Ltd, a company that owns goaltipwin.com, an online sports betting website.

The website is also set to rate players' performances in the Premier League next season. This article is from the BBC News website. ? British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.
