    A British couple have been found dead in their holiday home in the Canary Islands.

    The two decomposed bodies were discovered after police broke into their apartment in the popular Tenerife resort of Playa de Las Americas.

    Police had been alerted by neighbours who reported unpleasant smells coming from the premises. There was no sign of an break-in having taken place.

    The couple, a man, 57, and a woman, 69, have not been named.

    They were found in the sitting room and bedroom respectively of their apartment in the Residencial Los Cardones complex.

    According to a preliminary forensic examination, they may have been dead for at least five days.

    It is not known how long the couple had been in Tenerife, although local reports said they had used the accommodation regularly in recent years.

    A police spokesman in Playa de Las Americas said "no lines of inquiry are being ruled out for the moment".

    The Foreign Office confirmed "it has been informed of the death of two British nationals in Tenerife and is providing consular assistance to next-of-kin".
