South Wales Police said the woman, in her 40s, is in custody on suspicion of attempted murder after the incident at Blaenclydach Street at 1725 BST.
The unnamed 50-year-old local man in a stable condition at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.
Armed officers have been deployed to the scene as a precaution to ensure the safety of the public and police.
A police spokesman said an investigation was on going and witnesses, or anyone with information, are asked to contact South Wales Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
