Fans rush for Glastonbury tickets

Tickets for Glastonbury Festival 2011 have gone on sale with thousands of fans flooding the website.

The festival's website and Twitter feed said "just under half the tickets are still available", apologising for problems accessing sales online.

Fans are able to reserve up to eight tickets by paying a £50 deposit now and the rest when the booking site re-opens on 1 April 2011.

Passes for next year's festival cost £195 - up £10 on last year's price.

However they need to have registered on the site before Sunday.

The site, which has switched its front page to text only due to the thousands of people trying to access it, stated that registration and registration look-up are "currently closed" until 4 October.

Last year about 178,000 fans and 30,000 staff attended the festival on its 40th anniversary at Worthy Farm in Somerset, which included Stevie Wonder and Kylie Minogue among its huge line-up.

Concerns about overcrowding at Glastonbury Festival were raised afterwards by Mendip District Council in its annual report on the event.

The council report said "subjectively the site felt extremely busy". But it added it was an "unqualified success" and that all recommendations were about building on good practice.

Glastonbury Festival organisers were unavailable for comment on the council's report.
