A lodger has been sentenced to life imprisonment after admitting murdering his landlady and her 11-year-old son.

Krystian Rozek, 27, received two life sentences, one for stabbing Monika Wasko and the other for murdering her son Patrick at their Flintshire home.

He was told by a Mold Crown Court judge he must serve a minimum of 27 years.

Rozek previously denied the attempted murder of Mrs Wasko's husband Rafal, and the charge will lie on file. All involved are originally from Poland.

Rozek was living with the family at Cae Hir, Flint.

The court heard he became "angry and bitter" after finding out his wife in Poland was cheating on him.

He took his fury out on the Wasko family, who had taken him in and shown him "nothing but kindness".

Mrs Wasko, 29, died at the scene in July.

Her son died at Alder Hey children's hospital in Liverpool three days after the attack.

Mr Wasko, 33, who has another son, has since returned to Poland.

Det Supt Stephen Gould, the senior investigating officer, said: "This was a particularly horrific and senseless attack on a completely innocent young family.

"Understandably it has had a devastating effect on the remaining family members, their friends, Patryk's school St Mary's Catholic Primary school, Flint and the wider Polish and Flint community.

"Although Rozek had recently separated from his partner in Poland, it is impossible to understand why he would act in such a manner towards a family that gave him a place to live whilst working in the UK.

"Throughout our interviews with Rozek he was unable to provide a reasonable explanation of why he attacked both Patryk and Monika and I suspect that had the deceased and her husband not intervened, the consequences may have been even worse."

He said family liaison officers were still working with Rafal Wasko and his son in Poland.
