    More snow disruption for England

    2 December 2010 Last updated at 01:48 ET More disruption to travel and schools is expected as England suffers more heavy snow.

    Gatwick Airport had hoped to open on Thursday but will now remain closed until at least 0600 on Friday.

    Up to 25cm of snow was recorded around Gatwick in Surrey - 15cm falling overnight.

    Met Office heavy snow warnings are in place for Yorkshire and Humber, north-east and south-west England, the East, London and South East.

    Snow showers and ice are expected to affect the whole of England, with further disruption on the roads and rail.

    Southern trains has suspended its services and there will be no services running south of East Croydon until further notice, while a limited service will begin in the "London Metro" area at 1000 GMT.

    Southeastern is running an emergency timetable.

    Passengers on one Wednesday evening train service to Brighton had to sleep in carriages overnight.

    The Association of Train Operating Companies said rail operators and Network Rail were "doing all they can to keep trains moving and get people to where they need to be".

    A Gatwick Airport spokesman said: "We are doing everything we can to resume operations, however conditions have deteriorated considerably.

    "Our teams are working around the clock to make the runway safe for aircraft to use and get our airlines and passengers flying again."

    Hundreds of schools are expected to remain closed on Thursday.

    On Wednesday, treacherous driving conditions on a stretch of the A57 between Anston and Worksop meant many drivers were stranded in their vehicles.

    Travel by tram Barnsley Hospital, in South Yorkshire, has closed its outpatients department and cancelled non-urgent operations for Thursday because of the snow.

    Some residents of Binbrook in Lincolnshire said the village was virtually cut off because of the heavy snow.

    In Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, health chiefs were using 4x4 vehicles to collect staff unable to reach Diana Princess of Wales Hospital.

    Passengers faced delays of up to an hour on Eurostar services and half of the services between London and Brussels on Thursday have been cancelled, with passengers urged to check Eurostar's website for further information.

    In Sheffield, Ian Cawthorne, 25, and Alecia Houghton, 22, battled through snow to travel by tram to their wedding ceremony at the city's Town Hall after their cars failed to turn up.

    However, two other couples who had been due to marry at the same venue had to cancel their ceremonies.

    The UK has been experiencing the earliest widespread snowfall since 1993.
