    Collapsing basement kills builder

4 December 2010 Last updated at 06:08 ET A builder working on a basement excavation in south-west London has been crushed to death by a collapsing floor.

The 37-year-old man was at work on a house in Ellerby Street, Fulham, on Thursday afternoon when the floor fell through.

He was caught under the rubble and died at the scene.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the Health and Safety Executive were involved in the investigation.

"We were called at 1500 GMT to a building collapse," he said.

"A man was pronounced dead at the scene."

The man has not been named. A post-mortem examination will be held on Monday.

The work was being carried out by Hertford company Siday Construction.

Basement problems The firm has not responded to the BBC's request for a comment.

Its website advertises "bespoke basements" and refers to a 20-week, £235,000 project to "install basement under existing house" in Ellerby Street.

It is the latest in a series of incidents involving London basement conversions, which are carried out to give the homeowner more space.

In October a skip in Belgravia sank below the surface of a road after ground was excavated underneath it.

In March two Camden families had to have their homes demolished after work carried out without planning permission on a nearby property caused structural damage.
