Two goals from Peter Odemwingie helped West Brom to a comfortable victory over Newcastle at The Hawthorns.

Midfielder Somen Tchoyi opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark when he curled in a superb effort from just inside the 18-yard area.

Odemwingie then took advantage of a Danny Guthrie slip when he ran into the box and fired a low shot past Tim Krul.

The Nigerian forward slotted in his second late on before Peter Lovenkrands poked in a consolation strike.

But it was arguable whether Chris Hughton's men deserved to get on the scoresheet following what was a poor and nervy display.

West Brom were marginally better, but most importantly they were more potent in attack.

Up until Tchoyi's goal, the first half had bordered on the turgid.

But at least West Brom had managed to string more than three passes together and offer a threat on goal unlike their hesitant opponents, who sat deep, seemingly paranoid about the Baggies' pace or perhaps the lack of their own.

Having a defence lacking confidence did not help either and midway through the half Sol Campbell, making his 500th Premier League appearance, saw his poor attempt at a clearance blocked allowing striker Odemwingie a run on goal.

Luckily for the veteran centre-back, the alert Jose Enrique covered and rushed the former Lokomotiv Moscow forward into his low shot which drifted wide of Krul's right-hand post.

That, along with Hughton's almost incessant barking of instructions from the touchline, should have clicked Newcastle into gear, but instead they sat back again and paid a high price when Tchoyi gave his side a deserved lead.

On this occasion Brunt's lay-off found the Cameroon midfielder and he sneaked his shot past the half-hearted attempts to block his effort and keeper Tim Krul, who appeared to have his view obstructed by a Baggies player.

Tchoyi tried his luck again with a shot at the near post but this time Krul made a good block.

The second half was far more lively - it had to be. Five minutes after the restart, Newcastle finally tested West Brom stopper Scott Carson when Steven Taylor's header, from Wayne Routledge's right-wing cross, was brilliantly pushed away.

And then Jonas Gutierrez ran down the left before poking in an angled shot which had to be cleared off the line by Marek Cech after Carson had committed himself and failed in trying to smother his effort.

But they were Newcastle's only bright moments in the West Brom final third and they paid dearly for their lack of endeavour and awful defending in the last 20 minutes.

The next West Brom blow came courtesy of Odemwingie who pinched the ball from Guthrie after the Newcastle midfielder slipped in the centre circle, outfoxed a static Taylor and Campbell, and slotted in his first.

Guthrie was subsequently taken off after suffering an injury as he fell.

The knockout punch was then delivered with a minute of normal time remaining when Odemwingie, again, sprung the offside trap set by the sleepy Taylor and Campbell and fired past the helpless Krul.

In stoppage time, substitute Lovenkrands made sure he at least had something to take back to Tyneside when he lashed in the loose ball after Carson had saved Andy Carroll's initial strike.
