The first and deputy first ministers will meet the head of the European Commission in Brussels later.
Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness are in the city to launch the Executive's European office.
The ministers' visit comes as the Executive grapples with deep spending cuts imposed by the Treasury and a budget that is weeks overdue.
The ministers will use their trip to brief the president of the EU Jose Manuel Barroso on a range of issues.
A key issue will be the commission established in Northern Ireland following the return of power-sharing.
The task force was charged with examining how to improve NI's access to European programmes.
They will also discuss the wider implications of the latest financial crisis, which has seen the Republic of Ireland introduce the most austere budget in its history.
