    Winter weather hits fuel supplies

9 December 2010 Last updated at 02:58 ET A third of independent Scottish garage forecourts have been closed after they were unable to receive fuel supplies.

Brian Madderson, chairman of RMI Petrol, which represents 6,000 independent forecourts in the UK, said 300 out of 900 were shut.

He said this was not due to a shortage but was a supply chain problem.

A Scottish government spokesman said extra efforts were being made to ensure supplies of fuel and food were delivered.

"Given the unprecedented weather and the disruption on the road network, extra efforts are being made to ensure supplies are delivered," he said.

East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and South Lanarkshire schools will be closed on Thursday.

"Everyone on the supply chain is working extremely hard to ensure adequate stocks of fuel and food. And through securing a temporary extension to the relaxation of enforcement of drivers' hours, we have protected vital additional driving time for haulage drivers to make essential deliveries.

"Food supplies remain plentiful, all of Scotland's key fuel terminals are open and there is a great deal of joint work on keeping key fuel terminals open to ensure the availability of fuel for Scotland's distribution network."

However, the National Farmers Union said milk collection in some parts of the country was now a major issue, with many dairy farmers having to dispose of milk in recent days.

Strathclyde Police said 60% of forecourts in its area now had supplies.

Meanwhile, soldiers from the First Batallion, the Royal Regiment of Scotland, will be on the streets of Edinburgh helping to clear up after major snowfalls as Scotland continues to battle the big freeze.

The Army was given formal clearance by the Ministry of Defence after a request from the city council.

The soldiers will be joined by personnel from the Royal Navy and the RAF.

With temperatures rising to above freezing, there has been a spate of burst pipes and floods across the central belt.

Conditions on the roads are extremely poor and the advice is still not to travel unless necessary.

Meanwhile, some schools are set to shut for a fourth day this week.

East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and South Lanarkshire all have blanket closures.
