    Many killed in Indian bus crash

    15 December 2010 Last updated at 00:14 ET A bus has veered off a road and plunged into a reservoir in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, killing at least 27 people, police say.

    The accident took place near Nanjagud village outside Mysore, 145km (90 miles) southwest of Bangalore city.

    The passengers were returning from a wedding feast when the incident happened. Five of them managed to swim ashore, reports said.

    Road accidents are common in India, killing hundreds of people every year.

    Most accident are blamed on reckless driving, old vehicles and bad roads.

    It was not immediately clear how many passengers were travelling in the bus when the accident happened on Tuesday.

    The dead included 23 women and three children, reports say.

    The driver of the bus lost control when he swerved to avoid a pothole, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

    More than 100,000 people died every year in road accidents in India - the highest road death toll in the world.
