    Pedestrian death toll reaches five

    6 January 2011 Last updated at 01:51 ET A man has been killed after he was hit by a car, while walking along a road in Irvine, North Ayrshire.

    He was the fifth pedestrian to be killed on Scotland's roads in the space of 24 hours.

    The man, whose identity has not been released, was walking on Long Drive just after 2100 GMT on Wednesday, when he was struck by a Saab.

    He was taken by ambulance to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock where he later died.

    Elli Williams, 16, from Auchterarder, was killed on the A9 after being hit by several vehicles near Auchterarder on Tuesday night.

    Emma and Jake Grier, both 76, from Motherwell, died when they were struck by a lorry as they crossed the street in Hamilton in South Lanarkshire on Wednesday morning.

    And a man died when he was knocked down by a car near Conon Bridge in the Highlands on Wednesday evening.

    Meanwhile, a woman is being treated for serious injuries at Stirling Royal Infirmary after being hit by a car on the A9 Plean-Larbert road near to Plean Industrial Estate.
