Man 'dreamt he should kill son'

11 January 2011 Last updated at 11:49 ET A south London church worker dreamt he should murder his three-year-old son then killed the boy in their home six months later, the Old Bailey has heard.

Jackline Otieno Deya said her husband Paul told her "dead people called him and he wanted to kill the children", especially their son Wilson.

Mr Deya, 32, from Bermondsey, south London, denies murdering Wilson.

He has also denied attempting to murder Jackline, 29, in November 2009, but has pleaded guilty to wounding her.

Mrs Otieno Deya said her husband's dream, which he had in May 2009, was a "spiritual incident".

"It was not a good dream and we prayed over it," she told the court.

"We didn't seek advice, we just prayed over it."

'Planned deed well' She said her husband became calm after these prayers, but she believed it was at this point that he formed a plan to kill Wilson.

Mr Deya had shown no signs of mental illness but was jealous of her, and wrongly accused her of having affairs, she added.

"Paul was angry and that is why he killed my Wilson," Mrs Otieno Deya said.

    "He was not mentally ill.

"He planned his deed well and left me heartbroken.

"I am not angry. I am feeling the pain of losing a child."

In a statement later read to the court, she said she found their son in a pool of blood and was then chased by Mr Deya.

Police then discovered Mr Deya with a cut throat but his life was saved by emergency surgery.

Their baby daughter was safe in another room.

Prosecution QC Richard Whittam said the couple had agreed to separate the previous evening.

The jury must decide if Mr Deya was driven by jealousy or mental illness, he said.

    The trial continues.
