Murphy to make NI Water statement

17 January 2011 Last updated at 01:30 ET The minister responsible for NI Water, Conor Murphy, is due to make a statement to the Assembly on the recent water crisis later on Monday.

Around 40,000 homes went off the mains supply when a thaw followed an unprecented cold spell.

The chief executive of the government-owned company, Laurence MacKenzie, resigned in the wake of the crisis.

Some MLAs have called on Mr Murphy to resign but a no-confidence motion is not expected to go ahead on Monday.

The Regional Development Minister has previously said that he went beyond what was expected of him during the crisis.

NI Water was severely criticised for its response to the crisis, with many criticising both its communications and its delays in coming to the aid of those in need.

A review into what happened has been set up, with the utility regulator set to look into the role of NI Water in the crisis.

The Office of the First and Deputy First Minister has asked two independent appointees to look at the role of Mr Murphy and his department.

Both elements of the review are expected to report back with recommendations by the end of February.
