Afghan death soldier named by MoD

6 February 2011 Last updated at 13:07 ET A soldier who died in an accident while working at a check point in Afghanistan's Helmand province has been named as 20-year-old David Dalzell.

Ranger Dalzell, from Bangor in County Down, was serving with 1st Battalion the Royal Irish Regiment.

The accident happened on Friday in Nad-e Ali, the Ministry of Defence said.

His parents Gordon and Susan paid tribute to their son, saying he left "a void that will never be filled".

His commanding officer, Lt Col Colin Weir, described Ranger Dalzell as "an extraordinary young man" who was "much loved by his fellow soldiers".

"He took to the field of battle like a natural," he said. "He was perfectly at home in the most difficult and dangerous of circumstances."

Colleagues in his platoon said he was a brilliant soldier.

Ranger Colin McMoordie added he "brought humour to a harsh environment".

A total of 352 UK service personnel have died in Afghanistan since 2001, including one on Saturday who is yet to be named.

The deaths include 42 who died in accidents, from illnesses, or from non-combat injuries.
