Cyber crime costs the UK economy £27bn a year, according to government figures.
The figures, published for the first time, come jointly from the Office of Cyber Security and security consultants Detica.
It will become the government's official statistical base for tackling what it sees as a growing threat.
The figure is made up of £21bn of costs to businesses, £2.2bn to government and £3.1bn to citizens.
Earlier this month, the UK signed up to a European Union directive aimed at tackling cyber crime amid growing calls for international action.
