A man has been arrested on suspicion of the kidnap of Sian O'Callaghan, who disappeared after leaving a nightclub in Swindon on Saturday.
Miss O'Callaghan, 22, has not been seen since she left the town's Suju nightclub in the early hours.
Chief Superintendent Steve Hedley announced the news after police searching for Miss O'Callaghan appealed for sightings of a taxi.
He said: "Sian's family have been informed."
Ch Supt Headley, from Wiltshire Police, said: "A short time ago a man was arrested on suspicion of the kidnap of Sian O Callaghan and is en route to a police custody centre.
"Further information will be released in due course but it is not appropriate for me to make any further comment at this time."
The taxi, a green Toyota Avensis estate, was seen between Swindon and the Savernake Forest, near Marlborough, Wiltshire, shortly after Miss O'Callaghan was last seen.
Det Supt Steve Fulcher, who is leading the inquiry, said: "I am urgently appealing for any witness sightings of a green Toyota Avensis estate with taxi markings seen between 3am, 4am and 12pm to 9pm on 19th March 2011 between Swindon and Savernake."
Specialist dog teams were drafted in to help in the search for the office administrator on Thursday after detectives using mobile phone technology pinpointed several areas of interest in the 4,500-acre Savernake Forest.
Police revealed earlier this week that phone masts put Miss O'Callaghan's mobile somewhere in the forest just 34 minutes after she left the nightclub at 2.52am.
