    Rai, Lahiri finish tied 12th

    Himmat Rai signed off with a two-under 70 to join Anirban Lahiri at the 12th place as none of the Indians could manage a top 10 finish in the Myanmar Open. Rai's final round featured three birdies and as many bogeys as the Indian finished with an aggregate of eight-under 280. Lahiri's round included four birdies and as many bogeys. Digvijay Singh turned in the best round of the day by an Indian, carding five-under 67 to finish tied 43rd at three-under 285.

    Aravind crashes out

    Indian shuttler Aravind Bhat played his heart out before going down to fifth seed Scott Evans in a marathon three-game quarter-final of the Dutch International. The second seed Indian lost 21-23 28-26 15-21 to Evans in a one-hour-and-four-minutes encounter. The Bangalorean had earlier qualified for the final eight by beating Jakub Bitman and qualifier Marco de Jager respectively in the last two rounds.

    Parimarjan in joint lead

    Parimarjan Negi outwitted Armenian GM Hrant Melkumyan to take the joint lead in the Dubai International Open chess. D Harika, playing with black against Eduardo Itturizaga of Venezuela, was happy to take a draw when her opponent proposed it after a mere 11 moves. However, as the rules stand, no draws are valid before move 30, so Harika tried to play fast and reached move 30 but by then she had already lost the position.

    Portsmouth shock Spurs

    Debt-ridden Portsmouth reached the FA Cup final on Sunday by beating Tottenham 2-0, a day after the 2008 winners were relegated from the Premier League. Frederic Piquionne broke the deadlock in the ninth minute of extra time, and Kevin-Prince Boateng added another from the penalty spot. In the Premier League, Manchester United squandered a chance to temporarily regain leadership when they were held 0-0 by Blackburn. Manchester City strengthened their hold on fourth place with a 5-1 win over Birmingham. Without injured striker Fernando Torres, Liverpool were held 0-0 at home by Fulham.

    India crowned team champions

    India were crowned girls team champions in the Asian Youth Weightlifting Championships which concluded in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, thanks mainly to 48kg lifter Matsa Santoshi's three-medal haul. India emerged champions ahead of traditional weightlifting powerhouse China. On the first day of the championships on Friday, Santoshi won gold in snatch with a lift of 68kg and added a silver in clean and jerk with an effort of 88kg. Her total lift of 156kg fetched her a silver.

    Shamim wins matchplay title

    Shamim Khan outclassed Vinod Kumar 3&1 in the final of the SRF All-India Professional Golf Matchplay at the Delhi Golf Club on Sunday. Shamim's third title win ended his 16-month title drought and also catapulted him from 18th place to second position on the domestic Order of Merit. Ashok Kumar defeated Randhir Singh Ghotra 2 & 1 to win the playoff for third place.

    Churchill beat Lajong

    Nigerian Odafe Okolie scored the all-important goal as Churchill Brothers beat Lajong FC 1-0 in a round 20 match of the I-League to close the gap at the top of the tally. Churchill, who survived a stiff challenge in the first half of the match, surged ahead in the 42nd minute through Okolie.
