Despite being pitted against an opponent taller to him, Ishaque Eqbal seemed to enjoy the challenge as he displayed superb game to defeat Amit Bazad 8-3 to win his match in the boys' Under-16 final qualifying round and entered the main draw of the AITA Championship Series Tennis Tournament played at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association and Lake Club Sports Complex, Sector5, on Sunday.
Ishaque, who hails from West Bengal, played his shots to perfection and never gave his opponent much space to make a comeback into the game. Meanwhile, Barun Gill overcame a stiff resistance from Samrat and won the thrilling match via tie-breaker by 8-7 (3). Seap Yip and Manav Malhotra were also engaged in a thrilling encounter but the former emerged victorious after holding his nerves to win the match by 8-7 (5).
In the girls' Under-16 singles second qualifying round, Harsimran outplayed Shristi Dhanda 4-2, 4-1 to surge ahead. Overcoming heat and exhaustion, Harsimran claimed both the sets and recorded an easy win. In an exciting match, Vaishnavi came back after losing the first set to win the next two sets in succession and recorded a memorable 4-5(8), 4-1, 5-3 win over Arshpreet. The match between Protiksha Sharma and Ayna Arora also stretched to three sets but Protiksha emerged winner by 5-4, 1-4, 4-0.
Meanwhile, Ankita Roa overcame Colvin Golmei in a marathon match to win his final qualifying round match in the boys' Under-12 category by 4-1, 4-5(5), 5-4(7). After easily winning the first set by 4-1, Ankita lost the second set 4-5 (5) in a tie-breaker. Bolstered by the win, a confident Colvin had Ankita on his toes but the latter defeated him in a tie-breaker. Sagar Bains also faced a stiff resistance from Mrityunjay Badola but managed to win the match by 4-0, 2-4, 5-4 (7).

Gurpreet, Manpreet win gold Patiala: Gurpreet Singh and Manpreet Kaur came up with stellar performances as both of them claimed gold medals in the men's +90 kg and junior girls under-56 kg categories, respectively, in the Patiala District Sub-Junior, Junior and Senior Wushu Championship at the NS National Institute of Sports in Patiala on Saturday. Sandeep Singh secured the first position in the under-45 kg junior boys section, while Parteek Maan captured silver medal. Meanwhile, Jiwan, Pardeep and Rohit Singh got gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the under-65 kg class.
