ICC keen on not repeating mistakes of 2007 during World T20

    Tue, Apr 13 04:17 AM

Wiser from the previous experience of playing to empty galleries during the 2007 World Cup, ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat insisted that World T20 championships in the Caribbean next month will present a different and much brighter picture.

"We have learnt from the 2007 World Cup. Perhaps pricing of the tickets was the fundamental reason (behind low turnout) there. It was not really affordable for them. The Caribbeans are small communities and it was not affordable for them to buy tickets of all matches," Lorgat said. "While pricing of the tickets is key, we are also retaining the Caribbean flavour this time. Every territory has its own style and culture and we will encourage them to get involved in their own way. I'm hoping they would come out in full swing and there will be a party atmosphere all around," said Lorgat, while displaying the trophy that 12 teams will vie for.

Lorgat did agree that T20 has enjoyed overwhelming popularity but insisted that two World Cups in two years within the ICC calendar is merely an initiative to correct the anomaly and slot each of ICC's flagships events in a proper five year cycle.

He however, ruled out any specific window for the IPL that has, inadvertently, put brakes on the international Future Tours Programme due to pressure from players over respective boards. "I don't envisage a window for IPL, which is a domestic event. It's difficult to incorporate all domestic tournaments. The Future Tours Programme schedules only international cricket. In addition to that, IPL (governing council) has not sought any window," he explained.
