The Los Angeles Clippers have fired interim head coach Kim Hughes the day after the team missed out on the playoffs for the 15th time in 17 years.
Under Hughes, who took over from head coach Mike Dunleavy on Feb. 4, the Clippers went 8-25 before ending the regular season with a 107-91 win against the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakes on Wednesday.
"We appreciate Kim's contributions during his time here, especially over the last two-and-a-half months," Clippers president Andy Roeser said in a statement on Thursday.
"But we also know that our responsibility is to do what is in the organization's immediate best interests for its ability to move forward.
"This season was an overall disappointment and certainly fell short of both our expectations and what should rightly have been anticipated by our fans."
The Clippers ended the season 12th in the 15-team Western Conference with a 29-53 record. A major blow for the franchise was losing power forward Blake Griffin to a knee injury in their final pre-season game on Oct. 23.
Griffin, the number one overall pick in the NBA Draft, was ruled out for the entire season.
