Portland's Roy likely back within two weeks after surgery

    Sat, Apr 17 07:30 AM

Portland Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy had arthroscopic knee surgery on Friday and is expected to be back in action within two weeks, the NBA team said.

The six-foot six, three-times All-Star has already been ruled out of the first round of the playoffs against the Phoenix Suns but he could return should Portland advance.

"We've got to listen to what the doctors are saying," Trail Blazers head coach Nate McMillan said in a statement. "That's the time frame (one-two weeks) they gave us. A lot of time they base that off of what they did during the surgery."

The 25-year-old Roy, who leads Portland with 21.5 points per game this season, was injured in Sunday's 91-88 win against the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers.

Although initially told he could be sidelined for up to six weeks, he decided to go ahead with surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.

"We know that's going to be a challenge," McMillan said of Roy's absence from the best-of-seven first round of the playoffs which starts on Sunday in Phoenix.

"Regardless of what we've done in the past without Brandon, it's a new season. We're going to have to do it again and have ourselves ready to go."
