Sialkot, Apr 24 (PTI) Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has raided the residence of Malik family after finding the decorations to celebrate the homecoming of Shoaib and Sania Mirza excessive and unwarranted. Sources said that the WAPDA officials during the raid yesterday told Malik''s family members that no one was allowed to use electricity in such an extravagant manner at a time when the country is reeling under acute power crisis.
"The power officials immediately asked the decoration to be removed and checked all the connections in the house," a source said. The Pakistani government, in recent times, had taken several measures to conserve energy and had even announced that marriage halls would only be allowed to hold functions for three hours.
The government also switched to a five-day working week with banks and governments offices to be closed on Saturday and Sunday from this weekend. Shoaib, who is in Lahore with his bride, has planned a reception in Sialkot tomorrow and then his Valima reception in Lahore on the 27th in which many dignitaries, celebrities and cricketers have been invited.
"It will be interesting to see if the government gives any relaxation to Malik and his wife for their Valima reception given the sort of fan following and media interest they have caused since reaching Pakistan with even the government feting them and celebrating their marriage," another source said. Just couple of days back, the Geo news channel had reported that some high profile cricketers were pulled up by the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation for not paying their bills properly and using illegal connections although the players denied this but promptly cleared bills.
