Rangers secure title with win over Hibs

    Sun, Apr 25 09:28 PM

Rangers clinched their 53rd Scottish league title on Sunday with three games remaining when Kyle Lafferty's first-half goal gave them a 1-0 win at Hibernian.

The champions have 83 points from 35 matches while second-placed Celtic, who beat Dundee United 2-0, have 72.

Rangers took the lead in the 17th minute as striker Lafferty fastened on to a terrific lobbed pass from the centre circle by Kenny Miller.

He raced down the left and held off two Hibs defenders before slashing a low, 15-metre shot across keeper Graeme Smith and inside the right post.

Hibs had little to offer in the first half until Paul Hanlon glided a 10-metre header from the middle of the box wide of the left post from a John Rankin corner five minutes from the break.

However, they gave Rangers a couple of scares in the second half when David Wotherspoon's shot flashed across goal. Then on the hour, Hibs striker Derek Riordan went down in the box under a challenge from Rangers defender Stephen Whittaker, but the referee waved play on.

Rangers keeper Allan McGregor pulled off the save of the match in the 77th minute, diving full-length to his left to push away a fierce, angled shot from Riordan.
