    Wed, Apr 28 04:16 AM

Two weeks ago, when Chandigarh's Feroze Grewal claimed the second position in the South Eastern Asia under-13 Golf Championship held in Thailand, the 13-year-old youngster rated the experience of playing in domestic circuit highly.

On Tuesday, the golfer made that count by claiming the top spot in the 14-16 years category after the end of the first round in the Toyota Etios Tour - Haryana Open that got under way on Tuesday at the Golden Green Golf Resort in Gurgaon. The youngster returned with a score of 76 followed closely by Vidit Singh on 77 and Atreya Sinha on 78.

Feroz made four bogeys and could not make a single birdie in the round. But it didn't matter. Local favourite Honey Baisoya of Delhi was close behind on 79, despite hitting three birdies, but he dropped too many shots in his round.

"It was a perfect day but I could have played much better. The conditions were obviously hot but I wanted to be consistent on Day One. That's what happened today and I will be aiming to maintain the lead on Day Two," said the youngster from Chandigarh.

In the 16-18 years category, Rahgav Bhandari, who scored an even-par 72 with 5 birdies, was tied for the top spot with Tarundeep Chadha.

Chadha had a strong start with four birdies on the first nine holes for a record score of 33 but couldn't sustain the momentum and came back with 39 to finish on 72.

    Sangwan justifies top billing

In the 12-14 years category, Gurgaon's Piyush Sangwan, ranked number one in his age group fulfilled the promise by shooting a 74 followed by Prakhar Asawa on 76 and second ranked Viraj Madappa on 78.

Sangwan showed remarkable consistently with one birdie on the par three 16th off setting one bogey and one double bogey on the 15th.

There is a cut at the halfway stage and the top 60 players or the top 15 in each age group will compete in the last two rounds. Earlier more than 90 golfers in various categories teed of at the start of the tournament.

A pre qualifying tournament on Monday saw 64 players vying for entries as only ranked players in each age division earned automatic entry into the tournament.

The Toyota Etios Tour - Haryana leg is the opening leg of the 7 event Toyota Etios Tour 2010 - the official national tour of the Indian Golf Union from which players earn ranking points for selection of national and international teams.
