New Delhi, May 3 (PTI) Local favourites Parimarjan Negi and Abhijeet Gupta will spearhead the Indian challenge in the Commonwealth Chess championship beginning here on Sunday. Over 20 Grandmasters, including Parimarjan and Abhijeet, will be in the fray for the event which is also part of India''s preparation for the Asian Games later this year in China.
Overall, about 300 players from more than 20 countries will pit their wits in what promises to be the strongest ever Commonwealth chess championship. Russian Alexei Dreev is the top seed in the Rs 8,00,000 prize money event, which would feature four other players, including Parimarjan, who have rating in excess of 2600 ELO points.
Parimarjan in fact will be the cynosure of all eyes as he will be playing in the city after a gap of over one year. Meanwhile, after a brilliant show in the Asian Continental Championship where he won bronze medal, Abhijeet is the other Indian who will be vying for top honours in a star-studded field.
The 2008 world junior champion recently tied for the top spot in the Reykjavik Open and the performance at Subic Bay in Philippines in the Asian continental was the perfect icing on the cake for the young Indian. Former world junior girls'' champion D Harika and former Asian champion Tania Sachdev will be hoping for medals in the women''s section and the former is a clear favourite for the crown.
