Mumbai, May 14 (PTI) Youngsters Dinesh CV and Som Vir scored 16 points each to help Soldiers overcome Lions 70-53 and storm into the men''s final in the Lakadawala-Developers Mastan Professional Basketball League at the Mastan YMCA courts here today. Lions, who were unbeaten in the league phase, just could not match the vigour and powerful play of the Soldiers.
Their captain Vishesh Brighuvanshi waged a virtually lone battle but did not get enough support and his individual score of 28 was unable to prevent Soldiers moving into the title-round. Lions looked lethargic and just could not match the youthful energy of Dinesh and Som Vir, who besides shooting well also excelled in rebounding, both in aggression and defence, using their height to good advantage.
Soldiers centre Jagdeep Singh, marked tightly by Brighuvanshi and Sarvan, also managed to shake off the shackles, drove in for some effective baskets and finished with 13 points. A 16-11 lead in the first quarter put Soldiers on the path to victory, but Lions hit back in the second, mainly through Brighuvanshi to win it 15-13 and trail at half time by just three points at 26-29.
Soldiers extended their lead by taking the third quarter 19-11 and then sealed the match with a 22-16 display in the last. (More) PTI VKV ABC DB.
