    Negi slips to second place

    Parimarjan Negi's seven-win spree was ended by Russian Grandmaster Pavel Maletin as the second seed Indian lost his ninth-round match in the Parsvnath Commonwealth Chess Championship in New Delhi. Maletin has now taken the sole lead with eight points, while Negi and Russian Dmitry Bocharov trail are half a point behind. Meanwhile, continuing his fine run in the tournament, Mumbai youngster Prasanna Rao held Asian Chess Championship bronze medallist GM Abhijit Gupta to a draw.

    Indian women held by NZ

    The Indian women's team drew 2-2 with New Zealand in the second test to maintain their 1-0 lead in the five-match hockey series at the Endeavour Trust Twin Turfs in Palmerston North. For India, Rani Rampal scored a field goal in the 34th minute and Subhadra Pradhan struck with a penalty corner in the 69th minute. Piki Hanahoma and Charlotte Harrison were the New Zealand scorers. The third match will be played at Kett Capital Hockey Stadium, Napier on Wednesday.

    New national mark for Tintu

    Reigning champions Railways had tallied 26 medals, including nine gold at the end of the second day at the National Open Athletics Championship in Kochi. They also bagged nine silver and eight bronze. Meanwhile, Kerala's Tintu Luka broke the 12-year-old meet record in 800m. Tintu clocked 2:01.61 sec, erasing the record Jyotimoyee Sikdar's record of 2:01.74 from 1998.

    Bagan beat East Bengal 2-1

    Ramirez Barreto and Snehashish Chakraborty helped Mohun Bagan register a 2-1 win over East Bengal in the I-League at in Kolkata. Barreto gave Mohun Bagan the lead in the 15th minute while substitute Snehashish struck in the 84th minute. Yusif Yakubu reduced the margin for East Bengal during injury time (90+3). Bagan have 36 points from 25 matches, while East Bengal remain on 29 points from 24 matches.

    Atwal tied 22nd in Texas

    Arjun Atwal returned a two-under 70 to be tied for the 22nd spot after the third round of the Valero Texas Open. Atwal, who had been tied 7th after the first round but dropped down after an even par second, totals five-under 211. Jeev Milkha Singh missed the cut despite a two-under 70 in his second round.

    England bid head resigns

    The chairman of England's bid to host the World Cup resigned after making bribery allegations against 2018 campaign rivals Spain and Russia. David Triesman was secretly taped by The Mail on Sunday newspaper suggesting Spain were planning to bribe referees at this year's World Cup with the help of Russia, who didn't qualify. The World Cup bid team also faxed letters of apology to the Spanish and Russian federations and FIFA.
