    The New Champs

34% football fans globally think Brazil will win the 2010 FIFA World Cup

39% Indians also believe that Brazil will win the World Cup

13% Indians feel Germany will be the victor whereas 11% feel Argentina will be the new champs

Only 9% of people globally think three-times world champs Germany will win again

Another 9% backs Argentina and the same percentage thinks England and the US will triumph

A patriotic 46% in North America feels they will lift the trophy this year though only 4% fans elsewhere rate their chances as strongly

Only 6% fans globally think current champions Italy will win

Just about 5% have hopes of France winning

    Who Is A Fan?

Interestingly, only 34% of people around the world describe themselves as soccer fans

Yet 51% of the respondents in The Nielsen survey said they will watch the games that will kick off in Johannesburg on 11 June

Around 60% of the respondents from across the world, including Europe, Latin America, Asia Pacific and the Middle East, said they will follow the finals

    The Passion Quotient

The Brazilians top the charts with 69% respondents claiming to be soccer fans

Brazil is followed by Portugal (60%), and Egypt (56%)

There is a high percentage of fans, 54% each, in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia

Venezuela and Vietnam follow with 53% and 52%, respectively

Interestingly, Italy and India are neck and neck with 48% and 47%

    The Followers

The appeal of the soccer World Cup reaches beyond soccer fans

The Nielsen survey reveals the countries with the highest percentages of fans are not always those where most people follow the games

The country with the highest percentage of people who will follow the matches are Brazil (84%), followed by Argentina (83%), Korea (76%), Portugal (75%), Italy (75%) and Mexico (74%).

Source: Based on a survey conducted by The Nielsen Company. The Global Online Survey was conducted between March 8 and March 26, 2010 and polled over 27,000 consumers in 55 countries throughout Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and North America.
