Robin Soderling came through his first real test of the Wimbledon fortnight on Monday when he beat Spanish ninth seed David Ferrer 6-2 5-7 6-2 3-6 7-5 in the fourth round. The Swedish sixth seed had not lost a set coming into the match and had spent the least time on court of all the players left in the draw, but was made to fight tooth and nail by Ferrer, who is more accustomed to clay courts.
A packed Court 12 watched the dramatic tug-of-war unfold and it finally ended when Ferrer sent a service return long after three hours and three minutes.
Soderling will play Spain's Rafael Nadal or Paul-Henri Mathieu of France for a place in the semi-finals.
