The Queen's Baton Relay had a completely different journey on Monday. In a unique travel plan, the Baton travelled through the Ganges.
As per reports reaching here, in the morning, the baton travelled on a motor boat till the 'Sangam Tat'. Then after travelling on road again, it reached Chunar, where the Relay visit the famous 'Qila' (fort) there. After that it covered the distance from Ramnagar to Varanasi on river Ganga again.
DM Varanasi Ravindra informs that it was rally of eight boats in which the Baton Relay proceeded. It got a grand reception on reaching Varanasi and impressive cultural functions were also organised at Varanasi.
When asked about the reports that Baton's arrival had been opposed in Varanasi by a group and that Varanasi Mayor had also opposed the Baton, Ravindra claimed, "It was just a group of 10 to 12 people who raised objections to the Relay saying that instead of spending so much of money on the Commonwealth Games, problems such as unemployment and poverty should be addressed. The Varanasi mayor was not part of this group. He only did not turn-up for the functions."
When contacted Varanasi mayor Kaushalendra Singh said that he did not attend the functions and had later organised a press conference to oppose Queen's Baton Relay. He said, this Baton should be only called the 'Commonwealth Baton' and not the Queen's Baton.
