Australia extended their lead over Pakistan to 293 with five second-innings wickets in hand at lunch on the third day of the first test at Lord's on Thursday.
Opener Simon Katich, the top-scorer in Australia's first innings with 80, proved equally obdurate second time around with an unbeaten 83 in his team's 188 for five at the interval.
He has now batted more than seven hours in conditions in which the pace bowlers on both sides have flourished. Twenty minutes' play were lost because of light rain after Australia resumed on 100 for four.
Nighwatchman Mitchell Johnson helped Katich add 52 for the fifth wicket with some confident stroke play, including an immaculate off-drive off Mohammad Asif to the boundary.
He had struck five fours to reach 30 before he was bowled by a full-pitched delivery from Umar Gul which uprooted his off-stump.
Marcus North, bowled for a duck by Asif in the first innings, was the other not out batsman on 20 at lunch.
