Louis Oosthuizen sensed his spiritual side after an inspired 65 fired him to within two shots of the lead at the British Open on Thursday. The 27-year-old South African dallied with Rory McIlroy's lead and a course record-equalling 63 before a bogey at the treacherous 17th 'Road' hole cut him back.
"It's holy ground we're walking on. It's just the way everything happens," a delighted Oosthuizen told reporters by the 18th green of the famed Old Course.
This is his fourth tilt at an Open title and he is yet to make the cut but Oosthuizen hopes a reprise of the form that saw him lift the Andalucia Open in March can see him through to at least the weekend.
"It was really a matter of getting my confidence up," he said of his previous Open efforts which included just one sub-70 round before Thursday's eight-birdie blitz.
"I came close to winning a few times on the European Tour and I think the win in Malaga early on in the year got my confidence going a bit.
"It's nice playing St Andrews. We play it every year in the Dunhill Links and it's the first time I've played here in an Open and it's just a great golf course. I love it."
