Sarosh Hataria clinches top honours in racing championship

    Sun, Jul 18 05:31 PM

Coimbatore, Jul 18 (PTI) Seasoned driver Sarosh Hataria of Meco Sports drove like a man possessed to clinch top honours in the Formula Rolon race in the 13th JK Tyre National Racing Championship here today. Delhi''s Karthik Shankar did the star turn coming on podium including a win in the Volkswagen Polo Cup events in the second round of the Championship.

The Formula Rolon event, which was not rolled out in the first leg in Chennai last month due to "cam" problems in all 15 cars entered in the race, was run today to assess the reliability of the vehicles having rectified the faults. However, the 15-lap event scheduled was reduced to 12-laps run in two parts as at the end of the first eight laps the race was ''red flagged'' to remove two-cars on the track as per safety regulations.

Ten of 13 cars entered for the race took to the grid. In the first eight laps, Sarosh Hataria of Meco Racing, who was bogged down by some gear problem shifted from third to fourth and then back to third in the race.

He soon sorted out the problem and in the second set of four laps, Hataria helped by a superb start made an impressive early charge before finishing the race in 14:32.777 minutes. 15-year-old G Vikash Anand of VA-Rad Racing, who was on pole, despite some gear problems managed to finish second (14:33.388) and Chittesh Mandody of Mohites Racing clocked 14:43.404 seconds for third place.

In the Volkswagen''s Polo cup, Chennai boy Vishnu Prasad drove flawlessly throughout the 15-lap first race, eventually beating a fighting Mumbai''s Sahil Shelar and Karthik Shankar. Prasad took 27 minutes 57.043 seconds, while Shelar finished second at 27:58.893 and Shankar timed 27:59.608.

It was a different story under reverse grid pattern in the second race where Karthik starting at the sixth place was turbo charged and won the race in style after forging ahead of Imran Majid of Game Over, who was on pole and held on to leadership spot for major period of the race. In fact, Karthik, Sailesh Bolisetti and Mohd Fahad Kutty were fighting tooth and nail.

But once he managed his way to the second behind Imran, it seemed Karthik could upset the leader at any time. And, rightly Karthik kept pushing his car to come under chequered flag in 26 minutes 00.310 seconds, while Vishu Prasad (26:00.512) and Parth Ghorpade (26:05.601) came second and third.

Karthik''s performance today finishing third in the first race and winning the second also helped him to the leadership position in this prestigious event. .
