CM carrot for engineers: Finish work on time, get month's salary

    Fri, Jul 23 05:32 AM

After declaring various deadlines for clearing debris and finishing off Games projects, Chief Minister Sheila Dik**** on Thursday tried her bit to encourage engineers by offering them a month's salary as reward if they complete works on time.

"It is time to rise to the occasion and prepare Delhi to host an international sports event which will be witnessed by a billion people. It is an excellent opportunity to project Delhi as one of the developed cities of the world," she told engineers engaged in Commonwealth Games projects at a meeting here.

The Chief Minister pointed out that streetscaping work has been found lagging at several places. "It has been seen that at several stretches the work is unattended and there no labourers or supervisors around," Dik**** said.

In fact, only 40 per cent of the streetscaping work in South Delhi has been completed. There are have been complaints that even on stretches where work has been completed the tiles have been placed shabbily. "During an inspection, PWD Minister Rajkumar Chauhan was able to pull out tiles with his hands just a day after they were laid," said a senior PWD officer associated with Games projects.

In a candid admission, Dik**** accepted that she was not very confident about the Barapullah Nullah elevated road and Ring Road bypass projects. "The two flyovers are definitely a matter of worry. Both are expected to finish in August," she said.

On the Barapullah Nullah elevated road, work is left on the stretch over the Nizammuddin Railway station line. Here, the PWD can only work during the night, that too after paying the Railways a hefty fee. Work on the Lala Lajpat Rai Crossing has been completed just a few days ago.

However, just finishing touches are left on the Ring Road Bypass.

Games Village officials to face actionThe Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has initiated action against several officials working in the Games Village and other venues after it detected mosquito breeding on the premises. The Safety Manager and In-charge Supervisor of the Games Village are among those against whom action is being taken by the Corporation.
