For Chandigarh golfer Vasundhra Thiara, last week was a special one. After claiming several top spots in the junior category in the domestic circuit, the seven-year-old young golfer from Chandigarh was ranked second in the Albatross Junior Golf Tour India. The young golfer from Chandigarh was also awarded a certificate in the Albatross Junior Golf Tour India's award function held in New Delhi on July 31.
"I am extremely happy on being ranked second in my category in the Albatross Junior Golf Tour India and it has boosted my confidence a lot. It is a result of a consistent performance in the domestic circuit by me and I am eager to repeat such performances. Rankings boost the morale of every player and it feels great to be at the top of the rankings," said the youngster, who is student of Class II in Vivek High School.
The Chandigarh golfer bagged the top spot in the CGA Junior Tournament held in February early this year before claiming the second spot in the 15th Albatross Junior Golf tournament held at Panchkula Golf Club in June early this year.
The youngster has been training under the guidance of coach Jesse Grewal and also qualified for US Kids European Championship held in Scotland in July 2010. But on Grewal's insistence, Vasundhra did not not take part in the event. " She has been doing well in the domestic circuit and we want her to continue that. She needs to take part in as many as domestic tournaments as she can before playing in other tournaments. It would be better if she qualifies for the championship in 2011," said Grewal.
It was in 2007 that Vasundhra took up golf. Her parents Ajay Thiara and Tanisha Thiara introduced her to golf and the youngster also took part in the football league at her school. "She played football and basketball initially at her school but golf was something which she liked a lot. She stated playing three years ago and has not discontinued football or basketball. She still plays in the school football league," said Tanisha Thiara.
