In a match that could have gone the either way, it was Sanyukt's second half goal that defined the outcome of the match as his solitary goal helped St Xavier's School, Sector 44 beat St Soldier's International School, Sector 28 in the final to win the St Xavier's Six-A-Side Soccer Tournament at St Xavier's School premises on Friday.
It was St Soldier's who started the match on an attacking note. Midway through the first half, Sumit Randhawa and Jaideep Jakhar tested the St Xavier's goal but were unlucky not to find the back of the goal. At the other end, St Xavier's best opportunity to open their account was in the 20th minute when Gagan Singh had an open goal in front. However, his shot went across the goal with a narrow margin. Ben William could have put his team into the lead in the 24th minute but in his anxiety, Ben's powerful shot went wide.
With their colleagues egging on, St Xavier's then snatched the match-winner in the 26th minute. Getting possession of the ball, Sanyukt zig-zagged his way by side-stepping a couple of defenders before netting the goal.
Gagan Singh of St Xavier's was adjudged the best player of the tournament, while Gaurav Ahlawat was declared the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
Earlier, in the semi-finals, St Xavier's defeated St Kabir-26 by 4-2. Ben William (5th and 27th) and Gagan Singh (10th and 22nd) were the scorers for the winning team. Ben got his second goal by converting a spot kick which was awarded when St Kabir's Sukhbinder Singh deliberately handled the ball. For St Kabir, Shivam Kanwar netted both goals.
In the second semi-final, St Solider's International eked out a narrow 1-0 verdict against St Anne's Convent School-32 by 1-0. The all-important goal was scored by Sumit Randhawa in the 6th minute.
