    Mertesacker misses Champions League opener

Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker will miss Saturday's Bundesliga game with Bayern Munich after breaking part of his eye socket in Germany's 6-1 Euro 2012 qualifying win in Group A on Tuesday.

    Mertesacker clashed with an Azerbaijan player and had to be taken off in the 11th minute before X-rays revealed a broken eye socket, the German soccer federation said on Wednesday.

    "The 25-year-old, as things stand at the moment, will miss the Bundesliga match against Bayern on Saturday," the DFB said in a statement.

    Mertesacker is to have further medical checks in Bremen on Wednesday but will not need surgery.
