Chennai, Sep 11 (PTI) Brazil has been missing the chances of returning to World Group of Davis Cup since 2003 but they are determined to break the jinx this time when lock horn with India in the World Play-off tie commencing from September 17 here. "We are ready to break the jinx of having missed out on the chances since 2003.
We have this classic situation about hard court performance. This time we have very good players.
Our strategy is to get five points from this tie," Brazil captain Joao Zwetsch told reporters here. Speaking after a two-hour practice session at the venue here, he said, "We know exactly what we could expect here and face the challenges.
We will fight hard to win over India." As for the World Group Play Off, India and Brazil have met twice previously in Davis Cup and are tied 1-1.
Their most recent meeting was in 1991 World Group quarterfinal in Sao Paulo where Brazil won 4-1 on outdoor clay court. Making the World Group early this year, India lost in the first round to Russia 3-2 in Moscow in March, while Brazil defeated Uruguay 5-0 in Bauru to earn its berth in the play off to meet India.
They have not won on hard court since 1991 having played on eight occasions so far. India had finished runner-up in Davis Cup history on three occasions 1966, 1974 and 1987 while Brazil had twice finished as semifinalist in 1923 and 2000.
"On first day two singles matches are the key for us as singles are very important. If we could play the doubles with a 2-0 lead, it would be a different situation and I will be more relaxed and it is important for our players also.
We are looking to fight for gaining every point, which we know well," Zwetsch said. Explaining on the challenges that they are ready to face, Zwetsch said, "As for singles, Somdev (Devvarman) and Rohan Bopanna have different styles of play and they are dangerous.
We have to be ready for taking our chances without missing them," he added. "We lost out in this group during the last four years.
We played more matches in Europe and on indoor facilities. It is also a touch proposition.
We have to make big efforts to use to such situations. Year after year our players have got more experienced in this matter," Zwetsch said.
