Mexican teenager Esteban Gutierrez, whose backers include the world's richest man, will be Sauber's test and reserve driver next season, the Swiss-based Formula One team said on Monday.
The 19-year-old will also take part in a young driver test with the team in Abu Dhabi after the season-ending race in November.
Monterrey-born Gutierrez won this year's GP3 title, one rung below the recognised GP2 feeder series to F1, with five wins.
His sponsors include telecommunications company Telmex, whose chairman and CEO Carlos Slim is the world's wealthiest person according to Forbes magazine with an estimated net worth of $53.5 billion.
"Esteban is extremely mature for his age, and it has been a great pleasure to have him with us a great deal of the time this year as an affiliated driver," said team principal Peter Sauber in a statement.
"The team was rooting for him during his intelligent fighting performances in the GP3 Series. We are confident he will continue to develop strongly."
