Hemant Sharma of Delhi did what most of his compatriots had not dreamt of, as he finished on top to claim the national chess title snubbing the challenge from International Master Rahul Sangma. For the record, Sangma finished at six points, while Hemant disposed of the challenge from Gurpreet Singh Maras and Arjun Tiwari, who also finished with seven points, same as Hemant, to win the championship on a better tie-break score on the concluding day of the 19th National Under-25 Chess Championship held at St xavier's School, Sector 44, on Monday.
Continuing with his brilliant form, Hemant once again made some super moves to defeat Krishna Prasad K C of Tamil Nadu in the final round. Hemant scored seven points out of possible nine and tied for first place with Gurpreet and Arjun but won the championship on a better tie-break score. Gurpreet , meanwhile, finished second after defeating IM Rahul Sangma of Delhi. Gurpreet also scored seven points out of possible nine, while the third spot was bagged by Arjun with 7 points, who defeated overnight leader Hemal Karsanji Thanki of Gujarat. Shreyansh Daklia of Chhattisgarh grabbed the fourth spot with with 6.5 as he defeated Pradip Tiwari of Maharashtra. City lad Himal Gusain finished with 5.5 points.
