    Air India grounded in Surjit Singh hockey

    Jalandhar, Oct 23 (PTI) Indian Oil edged out Air India 6-5 in the tie breaker here today to lift the Surjit Singh Hockey title. The match went to the tie breaker after the teams were locked 2-2 at the end of regulation time.

    With several international players on the side, Air India dominated the proceedings from the word go with V S Vinay drawing the first blood in the sixth minute off a penalty corner. However, the early lead was followed by a long dry spell for Air India which saw the team frittering away quite a few opportunities.

    Indian Oil''s Raghunathan made it 1-1 followed by its captain Inderjit Singh who snatched the lead from the opponents hitting home to make it 2-1. Air India''s dry spell ended only in the 65th minute when Sandip Michael scored for it to get even with Indian Oil at 2-2.

    The match was decided through the tie-breaker as the teams could not forge past each other at the end of the regulation time. Title winners Indian Oil lifted the tournament gold cup and a cash prize of Rs 2.5 lakh.

    Air India captain Sameer Daad was declared Man of the Match while Chicklengsena of Indian Railways was adjudged Man of the Tournament.
